Do I need a special pen or pencil to write on stone paper?
Ballpoint pens and pencils work best. Ink and the felt tip can be subject to bleed.
Do you mine your stone to make stone paper?
No, calcium carbonate is one of the world's most abundant resources, our manufacturers gather it from waste quarries and waste from the construction industry.
Does stone paper tear?
It is much more difficult to tear and will generally stretch before it tears.
How is stone paper different than regular paper?
Stone paper is a type of paper that is made out of calcium carbonate 80% (limestone) and bio-polyethylene resin 20% (HDPE). In this case, the HDPE is used as a binder. Thereby, limestone from existing limestone quarries is being used as the raw material and processed into a fine powder.
Unlike regular paper, stone paper is waterproof and smoother. No trees, no water, no bleach, no acids, and no toxic chemicals are used to make stone paper. Traditional pulp paper uses hydrogen peroxide to bleach it white. Also If no water is reused and/or re-circulated, a paper plant may use as much as 150-170 Litres of water to make just 500grams of paper. It would also take a little more than half a tree to make a carton (10 reams) of 100 percent, non-recycled paper.
Is stone paper recyclable?
In Australia our recycling facilities are still new to stone paper. For Gracious Minds journals; if you don't wish to store yours, please remove the cover (made from linen or canvas and 100% recycled chipboard) this can go in your recycle bin, then the stone paper can be dropped off at any Redcycle recycle bin (located all over Australia) https://www.redcycle.net.au/where-to-redcycle/
Tell me about the 20% resin used to produce stone paper?
Our resin is made from HDPE; it is used as a binder to keep the calcium carbonate together in flat sheets and to give the finished product the foldable quality of the real paper. We are currently working with our manufacturers to produce a stone paper which is made without resin and with a biodegradable binding agent.
Where are your journals made?
Our materials are sourced from Denmark and Taiwan. They are then sent to our journal binding/ stone paper manufacturers in Taiwan.
